Docklands Yacht Club overlooks Victoria Harbour with sweeping views of the Melbourne City skyline and the ever changing Docklands precinct. From January 2016, sailing will take place from the 60 metre pontoon at our new premises - the Community Boating Hub, 912 Collins Street, adacent to the Library at Dock Square. Community Sailing days are normally the second and fourth Sunday of each month year round from 11am but are subject to change (check Calendar page for more details). Everyone is welcome. We supply the boats, lifejackets and instruction.
Netballers become sailors at DYC
It's always interesting when we get a group of new sailors at DYC.
However, last Sunday saw a group of 32 netballers swell our Community Sailing Day numbers, with most sailing for the first time.
DC North East Blaze Netball Club were having an 'Amazing Race' day, which required them to read clues and find their way to Docklands Yacht Club. The ladies arrived in groups and were fitted with lifejackets before launching 8 of our boats. After some instruction on the pontoon, the first pairs filled the 8 boats and raced across Victoria Harbour to our waiting rhib, where they were presented with Discover Sailing hats, before racing back to the pontoon to change teams.
The teams all performed remarkably well for novice sailors, with only 2 teams requiring some outside assistance.
Once the netballers had moved on, we had a busy afternoon, with groups of members and more new sailors taking to the water. As the afternoon wore on, the winds started to pick up and Commodore Russell Phillips called the boats in, so it was an early end to a busy day.
Short Course Racing returns on 19th Feb, with our next Community Sailing Day on Sunday 26th.
