From January 2016, sailing will take place from the 60 metre pontoon at our new premises - the Community Boating Hub, 912 Collins Street, adacent to the Library at Dock Square. Community Sailing days are normally the second and fourth Sunday of each month year round from 11am but are subject to change (check Calendar page for more details). Everyone is welcome. We supply the boats, lifejackets and instruction.
First Short Course day completed
Saturday October 23 was the first racing day for the 2016-2017 Short Course Series. Six races were completed in the Hansa 303 and Liberty.
A fresh southerly made for some good sailing, but the weather was very cool. Fortunately the showers that had been around in the morning abated before start time.
In the Liberties, Russell Phillips took the honours in all but one race when he was beaten to the line by Louis Phillips. Chris Elliott took six straight wins, sailing fast today.
Scheduled on one Sunday per month through until May next year, the Short Course Series is open to Hansa 2.3, Hansa 303, Liberty and other classes. Sailors may register to compete in any race or the whole series. Future dates are November 20, December 18, January 15, February 19, March 19 and May 21.
Short course racing is a great fun way to get a start or progress in racing and provides plenty of practice with starts and mark roundings. It helps to develop skills, technique and rules knowledge while enjoying some friendly competition. On most days, 4-6 short races of 10-20 minute duration are conducted.
