Docklands Yacht Club overlooks Victoria Harbour with sweeping views of the Melbourne City skyline and the ever changing Docklands precinct. From January 2016, sailing will take place from the 60 metre pontoon at our new premises - the Community Boating Hub, 912 Collins Street, adacent to the Library at Dock Square. Community Sailing days are normally the second and fourth Sunday of each month year round from 11am but are subject to change (check Calendar page for more details). Everyone is welcome. We supply the boats, lifejackets and instruction.
Community Boating Hub officially opened
Fine weather and ceremonies heralded the official opening of our new home at the Community Boating Hub.
Under clearing skies, the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, Minister for Planning Richard Wynne MP, and Lendlease Project Director Tim Campbell spoke at the opening ceremony of the newest addition to the Docklands skyline. A smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country ceremony were followed by an eye-dotting ceremony and blessing for the Dragon Boats and a performance by Polynesian dancers.
Around a dozen DYC members and volunteers were on hand following the official opening for a short Come Try session - and what an afternoon it was!
67 men, women and children were all signed on, fitted with lifejackets and set sail as the afternoon warmed up and the winds strengthened. Most had never sailed before and were local to the Docklands area. The 6 Hansa 303's that were on the water were well used, each going out many times across the afternoon.
It was great to see so many people having a brief introduction to sailing - we hope to welcome many of you back again in the future to one of our Community Sailing Days.
Thanks to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle for granting us a quick chat and a picture with Commodore Russell Phillips and Rear Commodore Christine Elliot in front of one of our Liberties. Thanks to the City of Melbourne, Yachting Victoria and our co-tenants for a great occasion.
And, as always, we couldn't have done it without our volunteers, signing people on, fitting them with lifejackets, instructing, coaching, skippering the boats and manning the support boat. Great job team!
